Washing my hands

Lemon juice
dropping in the pitcher
like water falling in my hands

I drop the sugar in the pitcher
as if putting soap in my hands

I fill the pitcher with water
as if I rinsed my hands off

I smell the soap when I’m finished
as if drinking a fresh cup of lemonade

And I remind myself
how important lemons are
