I Won’t Get Out of My Bed

I woke up this morning
From a night full of dread
And I had a weird thought
That popped into my head:
I won’t be getting out of my bed

“But school is today!” my parents protest
“I have to admit that this is true
But a day off would be nice, no work is due”
“I see your point and we’ll let you rest
But you’ll be out of bed for dinner at best”
“What makes you say that?” I respond with a whine
“We certainly have something in mind”
They say at exactly the same time.

I sit and stare at the TV screen
I turn it on to “The Athletes’ Dream”
It’s my favorite show, I have to say,
I watched so much I forgot the hours in the day!
“It is 6:00 pm!” I say with a gasp
I didn’t know how many hours had passed
I hear my parents chiming the gong
It’s dinnertime, we are having Chicken Hong Kong!

“That’s my favorite!” I say
“I could eat that all day!”
I slide down the pole
We don’t have stairs
Shovel food into my face hole
Like a sleuth of hungry bears
Oh no! I got out of bed!
Breaking the promise I had said.
